March 11th Mary Purucker
Book and Bagel Bar
Mary Purucker grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts near the Houghton Branch Library where she had her first library job at age 14 as a page. She received her BA and Master of Library Science from UCLA where the noted children’s librarian and author, Frances Clarke Sayers, was professor of Children’s Literature. After a semester with her, Mary decided that working with children was what she wanted to do.
After library school, Mary worked for the Los Angeles Public Library in the Central Children’s Room and on the bookmobile and then for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District for over thirty years as a school librarian at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. She also taught English at John Adams Middle School for two years. At the same time, she taught Children’s Literature and Literature for Young Adults principally at UCLA but also at CSULB, Loyola, and Pepperdine.
Mrs. Purucker has served on several of the American Library Association’s Young Adult Services Division committees as well as the Association of Library Services for Children. She also served on the California Literature Project and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Advisory Panel. She was a member of the state’s Library of California Board until 2002 and was the recipient of the Children’s Literature Council of Southern California, Dorothy C. McKenzie Award for contributions to the field of Children’s Literature.
